Damaged and the Beast was the first book in the Damaged series by Bijou Hunter. I came across the characters in her Serrated Brothers MC series and knew I wanted their full story.

It was written from a single POV, Farah’s. Farah Smith was a freshman in college. She had a tough life living in a family of drunks and addicts. She had her younger sister, Tawny, but they were primarily on the run with their father until turning eighteen and could take care of themselves. She was focused but incredibly insecure and seeking approval and acceptance as a result.

Cooper Johansson was gorgeous, rich and entitled. He was the heir to his father’s illegal enterprises and had never been told no in his life. No’s to him always became yeses very quickly. The Johansson’s ruled the town. He spotted Farah immediately and wanted her. The story was the push and pull between the two.

I liked the premise of the story and I was pulling for Farah and her sister to have a better life; however, her insecurities got the better of her and I had a difficult time relating to her. I didn’t understand her tears at the drop of hat - they didn’t always make sense. In order to understand her better, I would have liked more information other than “the incident that won’t be discussed.” There were quite a few of those inferred so it kept the story confusing. With that said, once more was revealed near the end, I began to understand and like the story better. However, I did wish it had come earlier in the book.

Additionally, Cooper was hard to like at times. Sometimes he was an entitled prick with no respect for others - those were the moments I didn’t enjoy. However, there were other times where he was sensitive and loyal to Farah. Those moments were more endearing.

And the girls, Bailey and Skye. Yea, horrific. No friends at all and I’m supposed to see Bailey in another story of the series. Yea, couldn’t stand her. Couldn’t stand Farah after dealing with Bailey either. Total doormat. It was 2nd grade behavior with adult topics.

I loved how the story wrapped up for the last quarter of the book. I did wish the story would have turned sooner. For me, it would have been more enjoyable in totality. In the end, it was worth it and it made for a great segue to Tawny and Judd’s story in Damaged and the Knight.

Damaged and the Beast Bijou Hunter 9781484084328 Books Reviews

POSSIBLE SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN THIS REVIEW - STOP READING NOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEM.

I struggled with this book and finally started skimming through each chapter in hopes it would get better. I noticed a number of the reviewers make Cooper out to be the bad guy. How in the word can they say that?? He is supposed to be next in line for his dad's mc, but the guy loses all his flippin man cards over Farah. He loves her and tries his best to help her. Yes, he's overly jealousy and yes, he goes too far being protective. But it's really almost sickening how he basically begs for Farah's attention. She shuts him down on more than one occasion and she RUNS EVERY TIME she gets scared. She never believes Cooper when he says he loves her. Farah even accuses him of being selfish when he suggests she see a counselor to help her with memories/nightmares from the event that happened to she and her sister five years prior. And she DOES need to talk to someone because it's implied she was repeatedly raped by a men her mom gave her to. But her response is to say that she doesn't talk about it. Her family doesn't talk about it. Do you know how many times she's uses that excuse?! And cry..... the girl cries more than anyone I've ever seen. Her parents sucked. Her past sucked. She's poor and her life sucks. I get it. But she has this guy who makes it so obvious he's head over heels for her and she just wants to mope and feel sorry for herself. Farah repeatedly blows Cooper off and it got on my last nerve! He was trying to help and she could never let him without thinking he really didn't mean it. Farah never gave Cooper the benefit of the doubt. Ugh!! I absolutely HATE whiny female characters that do that.

And the other girl characters in this book, the supposed friend Skye and Cooper's sister Bailey, were horrible and spoiled. Farah's already timid and uncomfortable and they keep throwing information about Copper's past chicks in her face.

Sorry. I hate leaving bad reviews because I know the author worked hard. The writing isn't bad so I respect and give credit for that. Maybe if I'd waited a little bit before writing this review it would be softer and not as negative. But as it is, you're getting the annoyed and honest review that reflects my complete distaste with the heroine and her actions/attitude throughout the entire story.

The next book in this series is about Farah's sister Tawny, and Judd, the man Cooper sends to save her.
Warning!! -- Book rage rant to follow

This book was awful. Just awful.

There was no character development. Cooper is abusive (maybe not physically with Farah, but every other form of abuse is there) and a cocky douche. Farah is....actually, I don't even know what she is, besides a doormat because there was no character development outside of what she offers to Cooper.

I swear I think this book was more about a Denny's restaurant and food than a story about a couple of college students.

And Farah's friends, Bailey and Skye (I think that was her name...they are so forgettable) were hands down the worst and complete jerks and I don't see how Farah could stand to be around them for more than two minutes let alone take their crap advise on everything.

This book had no development and gave me the most severe case of whiplash I've ever had (and I've been in several accidents). Would not recommend and honestly am upset that I even wasted my time on it. Even though I got it for free, I still feel like I'm owed money.
