I love these books for teaching early reading! I have taught two readers (one boy, one girl, different years) with book 1 and 2 as their first texts. They love the comic strip style stories they get to read as they are learning. My kids knew all of their letters and sounds, short vowels and a few recognizable sight words, before we started these books. By the time they finished the first book they were able to pick up and read other simple books. I love the teacher instructions at the bottom of each page that make it so easy to open and teach. No prep work required. The flash cards are handy for reinforcement of the vowels sounds. We did not use any of the writing pages in the books. Reading 2-3 pages a day, we were able to complete both books in 3-4 months. How many reading programs can boast that kids will laugh while they are learning to read? From these books I moved on to other instruction to reinforce phonics but these are an easy win in that learning can be fun!

An Ant Learn to Read Book 1 Home School Version By REAL Phonics Kallie Woods 9780983202318 Books Reviews

Like the other reviewers, I like the colors and the cute stories. However, I question the selection of words to begin the first lessons with. There are five words in the first story Ann, an, and, ant, has. Two of those are not words that a beginner can sound out. "Has" ends with a "z" sound. "An" is not pronounced the same as "Ann", at least not where we live. It's more like "un". Other books I have seen list those words as "sight words" and introduce them a little later on.

Also, the other books that I have looked at really emphasize the C-V-C (consonant-vowel-consonant) words to begin with. I think the idea is that it helps kids learn patterns in phonics. This book only introduces one C-V-C word (well, two if you count "hats" as well as "hat") in the first 7 stories.

I feel like my daughter's first lesson with this book was more frustrating than it needed to be. She already knows her letters and the sounds they make -- she just needs a fun intro to sounding out words. We will probably not continue with this book, at least for now.
This book introduces phonics quickly and methodically - but in a fun way. It's not a burdensome book, as it quickly moves your child into reading actual stories. I used this with my Kindergartener son, and he gained confidence because he was reading stories so quickly.

Your child needs to know their letters before moving into this book, but the book does take the time to teach the SOUNDS of each letter.
I homeschool my 5 year old and this book is great! Easy stories perfect for beginning readers. Although it does contain sight words but no big deal because my daughter has to learn those too!
Great for learning to read using phonics. Lots of repetition and very colorful! My daughter preferred this over other books I purchased.
We found this book when we were looking for something to introduce our four year old to reading before he started Kindergarten. He became overwhelmed and frustrated by many of the other phonics books on the market- but he loved reading the stories in An Ant. The instruction is gradual and fun! We finished the book in just a few months and have been eagerly anticipating book 2. These books were comprehensive and slow enough to allow him to gain the confidence he needed to tackle other learn to read books! Now he says "I love to read!" He sounds out words in every book we open and he'll be a fluent reader by the time he's 4 1/2! Wish we would have started even sooner- I'd give it 10 stars if I could!
My 6 year old daughter loved this book. She looked forward to reading to me every night and usually did two or three pages at her discretion. After she read to me, I read to her as usual. I cut out and laminated the included flash cards. She loved those too. She even liked the writing practice and wanted to do some ahead of the reading.

She is nearly through the second book in this series and has continued to love that book too. The Broden Books website talks about a third book but I have not been able to find it. I would buy the third book in a heartbeat. Seeing my little girl enjoy reading is priceless.

I have used other reading books with her, and we have a more formal reading curriculum as well. The An Ant Real Phonics books are fun and she really looks forward to them. I think these books could be used as stand alone in Kindergarten.

My daughter also liked the first 5 chapters of The Reading Lesson with Giggle Bunny. I have also used teach your child to read in 10 minutes a day, teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons and alpha phonics.

The An Ant Real Phonics series is our clear favorite. It is super easy to use and covers language arts concepts like vowels and consonants, suffixes and root words, and simple punctuation. The second book introduces commas, apostrophes, short and long vowel sounds and vowel teams, silent e, etc. The very short and simple verbal practice at the start of each lesson has helped cement these concepts for her. There are just a few sight words too.

This book would be wonderful for any child. Ten minutes in the evening gets you a lot of reading skills quick and easy. It's totally worth the price.
