This book was ok. But it was written in a very modern tone and style that did not really convey the time period. It felt like the characters were playing dress- up. The author used words like 'powerful' when the heroine thought about the hero. I prefer my inuenndoes to be exactly that - an insinuation - not a blunt object with which my eyes are being beaten. There have to be better ways to get it across to the reader that the Hero is large, powerful of physique, panther-like in his movements, and exuding an aura of alpha-maleness that is truly swoon-worthy without literally spelling it out. It just makes for awkward reading. We cannot have our cake and eat it too: a book is either a bodice-ripper historical, or it's a Regency Romance. Trying to make a Regency sizzle is like trying to grill a roast, you need a slow burn to get it right. This one tried to hard in the bedroom and lost out on plot and character.

I used to read historicals all the time, then I got burned out on them and switched to other genres. Vicky Dreilling's HOW TO MARY A DUKE, is the first one that has really caught my attention. I love that she took something a current as The Bachelor and moved it to regency England. Her characters were fresh, believable and wonderfully fun. I highly recommend this to all who are looking for a "can't put down" read.
You that show "The Bachelor"? This is The Bachelor Regency Style!! Loved Tristan and Tessa's story. The Duke and the matchmaker.... Perfection!! Was totally an awesome read. These two had so much chemistry. And I cried... And sighed... And cheered when they got to their HEA!! This book was Awesomesauce!!

I can not wait to read the other books in this series!!
I'm impressed with the different ideas for a story that I've come across when reading romance. This story was just as ingenious and also it had some amusing parts to it. As with other novels it is difficult to imagine how the hero and heroine will come together and in this case, with twenty four prospective brides to consider, how could the matchmaker be the one? Of course, everything works out for the best. Doesn't it always? What would a story be without a villain and this one does not disappoint. This novel has all the ingredients to make it well worth reading; congratulations Vicky on your first.
I struggled with whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. I decided on 4 because of the unique premise, strong start and good character developement. Also the things that made me think 3 might only apply to a small audience. For one - 'THE BIG SECRET' I hate that premise and it makes it very hard for me to sympathize with the heroine as I see most of her ills as being self inflicted because of her contortions to protect 'THE BIG SECRET'. I felt only lip service was given to historical detail which I can overlook in some instances but I felt the lack as the story went on. Also much was made about the heroine's supposed excellent matchmaking services but I felt she did a horrible job selecting the candidates for the duke, which the author tried to explain away with a weak excuse towards the end of the book. Finally my last irritant was the constant scenes where the hero just had to have the heroine he was so on fire for her but then nothing - just some heavy petting to my way of thinking. I don't need explicit porn but a little more in the way of love scenes would have been great.
Oh this was a delish historical! A clever twist on the ABC TV series "The Bachelor", set in the early 1800's. Well written, with a lovely long slow build up to the romance. There is a secret that we can surmise but it is just out of reach and it keeps us reading until the very end. This is about those sweet innocents of the Ton and their competition for husbands on the Marriage-Mart. It is also about how falling in love has nothing to do with arrangements.

Vicky Drieling has done wonders with this her first novel. I have already purchased the next two in the series as I can't wait to find out about the side characters from this offering.
Good writing, witty repartee, shameful secret, sexy, hunky Duke, what more could you want?
I have to say that I passed over this book a bunch of times based on the reviews. Then I purchased the book while on a business trip to waste some time reading in between flights. I have to say that it was good. Not my favorite (hence the four stars) but definitely worth the cost and time. The book involves a Duke who uses the services of a lady, who may or may not be overweight (I get the sense she's got curves and not skinny as a rail), to help find him a wife. I want to stress that her weight is not the center of this book. In fact, it's such a minor point that I was very surprised by some of the reviews. It's entertaining and I strongly recommend it.
Everyone has seen The Bachelor on ABC or at heard about it. Take that show and place it in Regency time and you have a hilarious book in your hand.

So we first meet our two characters at a ball. A ball! How fun, right? We have the matchmaker, Tessa Mansfield (would be like Chris Harrison) and you have Tristan Gatewick, the Duke of Shelbourne (the Bachelor). However, I just don't really see Chris Harrison falling for the candidate. We have things that lead to a chain of events that gives us The Bachelor "regency style". Tessa finds 24 girls for the Duke to court. If you ever watch The Bachelor you know that it's a train wreck waiting to happen. Just to let you know this is a fantastic train wreck to read. You laugh, you cry, and in the end you have the happy ending you crave from your romance novel. Along the way you learn how the past shapes these two characters lives and changes there course in life.

A marvelous read.
